Mark 9:2-13 The Son of Man
Introduction:
So far we have seen Jesus teaching in
synagogues
• Performing
miracles,
• Feeding
people, healing sick, walking on the water, calming the storm.
• However,
verse 29 of chapter 8 sets directions for the second half of the Gospel. We
have to understand Jesus’ question to His disciples and Peters answer to his
question to gain perspective for the transfiguration of Jesus.
• Jesus
question was, “But who do you say that I am?” although Peter gave right by
saying, “you are the Christ” his understanding was incorrect.
• We
have learned in that Peter rebuked Jesus (Mark 8:32) because he did not like
the idea of suffering Christ.
Transfiguration, v 2-3:
• Transfiguration
is Jesus way of showing His disciples His mission on the earth from a divine
perspective.
• The
word “Transfigure” from GK, “metamorphoun” carries the root meaning to change
• Romans
12:2, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of
your mind…”
• For
Christian person transformation takes place within where as for Jesus his
outward appearance changed to accord with his nature.
• As
a result His clothes became radiant and exceedingly white.
V-7 Cloud is often mentioned in Scripture as a symbol
of God’s presence and glory
• Exodus
24:15-16
• Exodus
34:5
• “This
is my beloved son”, “hear him” directive was to disciples, that sets Jesus
apart from Moses and Elijah and designates Jesus as God’s Son.
Conclusion:
Transfiguration is the promise of a
kind of life beyond what is apparent to our human eyes most of the time.
Transfiguration also reminds us God’s
providence and faithfulness to His people, from Moses, Elijah to Jesus, we see
how God provides for His people.
