Philippians 4:10-20

I. If you love Jesus Christ, you will serve others. (4:10)
     A. As evidence of salvation
     Matthew 25:41-46; Luke 19:8-9; Luke 18:22
          1. With rejoicing
          2. With concern
          3. With opportunity
     B. Self-imposed obstacles to serving others

II. Contentment in every circumstance is your kingdom mindset. (4:11-13)
     A. You can learn the secret of contentment (4:11-12) 
     B. You can do all things in Christ (4:13)
     C. Christ strengthens you (4:13)

III. Gospel fellowship includes serving other believers. (4:15-18)
     A. Supporting our missionaries' and other ministries' needs confirm our fellowship (4:15-16)
     B. Our gifts profit us (4:17)
     C. Our ministries please God (2:13; 4:18)

IV. Your security in God and riches in Christ free you to follow Jesus (and serve others) wherever He leads. (4:19)
     A. What does it feel like to be completely secure?
     B. How do you press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus? (3:14)
          1. Relinquish your self-preservation to God!
          2. Live joyfully out of God's perspective!
          3. Relax! It's not all on you! (Matthew 11:28; Isaiah 46:4)
          4. Live your redeemed life boldly! Serve others!
     C. Why does this sound like pie-in-the-sky, Utopian bible babble? If you're a Christian...
          1. Lost sight of the goal
          2. Running the race in your own strength
          3. Settling for rewards of the flesh

Guard Your Thoughts
Philippians 4:8–9

A: God has commanded us to think

  • Isaiah 1:18 “Come now, let us reason[a] together, says the Lord”
  • Psalm 32: 8-9 “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be curbed with bit and bridle, or it will not stay near you”


B: God has commanded us to think a certain way

  • Psalm 139: 1 “you discern my thoughts from afar”
  • We have seen in the sermon on the mount, that what we think matters to God
  • “27 You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart”, Matthew 5:27-28.


C: Why we think Matters:

  • Our behavior reflects our thinking
  • We are are to exercise mental discipline
  • “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth”, Colossians 3: 2

D: We  have to learn to think of the right things


  • whatever is true: The Word of God is Truth, John 17:17 His commandments are true Psalm 119:151
  • whatever is honorable: Or “noble”, things that are worthy of respect.
  • whatever is just or what ever or right: Righteous, things that are in harmony of God
  • whatever is pure: Untainted, free of contamination, morally clean.
  • whatever is lovely: Pleasing or attractive
  • whatever is commendable: or admirable or good repute: Things that are highly regarded 


E: We have to Practice what we think

  • Practice means repeating, 
  • A pattern of life, James 1:22, “But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves”.

  • Rejoice in who He is (Psalm 27:4)
  • Rejoice in what He’s done (Psalm 92:4)
  • Rejoice in His very presence (Psalm 16:11, Psalm 73:28, Habakkuk 3:17-19)

3. Trust in the Lord (4:6-7)

  • Anxious for nothing
  • Pray in everything
  • The promise of peace
