Philippians 4:8–9 - Guard your Thoughts (Part 11)

Worth It, Part 11
Guard Your Thoughts
Philippians 4:8–9

A: God has commanded us to think

  • Isaiah 1:18 “Come now, let us reason[a] together, says the Lord”
  • Psalm 32: 8-9 “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be curbed with bit and bridle, or it will not stay near you”

B: God has commanded us to think a certain way

  • Psalm 139: 1 “you discern my thoughts from afar”
  • We have seen in the sermon on the mount, that what we think matters to God
  • “27 You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart”, Matthew 5:27-28.

C: Why we think Matters:

  • Our behavior reflects our thinking
  • We are are to exercise mental discipline
  • “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth”, Colossians 3: 2

D: We  have to learn to think of the right things

  • whatever is true: The Word of God is Truth, John 17:17 His commandments are true Psalm 119:151
  • whatever is honorable: Or “noble”, things that are worthy of respect.
  • whatever is just or what ever or right: Righteous, things that are in harmony of God
  • whatever is pure: Untainted, free of contamination, morally clean.
  • whatever is lovely: Pleasing or attractive
  • whatever is commendable: or admirable or good repute: Things that are highly regarded

E: We have to Practice what we think

  • Practice means repeating,
  • A pattern of life, James 1:22, “But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves”.
