Sermon on Mark 3: 13-19
Call To Discipleship
Disciples of the Master:
The word “disciple” refers to a learner or follower. The word “apostle” means “one who is sent out.”
The apostle: ambassador, or messenger commissioned to carry out the instructions
In Hebrew 3 verses 1 is applied to Jesus as the Sent One of God, apostle.
(1) What was the common theme among them:
(a) They were not scholars,
(b) They were not scribes,
(c) They were not skilled speakers.
(2) What was uncommon among them:
(a) Five were Fishermen, Simon Peter, son of John, James son of Zebede John son of Zebede, Andrew Peter’s brother and Philip.
(b) Matthew a tax collector and Simon the zealot who was involved in a radical movement to overthrow Roman government.
(c) We do not have much history of Bartholomew, Thomas, James Son of Alpheus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot.
(3) How many of these men do we really know anything about?
• We know more about Peter, James, John, and Judas. But of the other eight, we pretty much only know their names.
• However, we will all know about them in Heaven, “and the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb”. Revelation 21:14.
(4) Why Jesus Chose Judas:
• One reason could be that Jesus wanted to show us how to love even our enemies.
• The main reason Jesus chose Judas is given to us in John 13:18-22,
“I do not speak of all of you. I know the ones I have chosen; but it is that the Scripture may be fulfilled, 'HE WHO EATS MY BREAD HAS LIFTED UP HIS HEEL AGAINST ME.' . . . He became troubled in spirit . . . and said, "Truly, truly, I say to you, that one of you will betray Me." The disciples began looking at one another, at a loss to know of which one He was speaking. (NASB) John 13:18-22.
Lesson: To know about Jesus is different than knowing Jesus.
The Mission of the Master:
(1) That they might be with him:
• Being with Jesus should be the first priority in each of our lives. If we would be like Him, then we must spend time with Him. If we would serve Him like He desires, then we must spend time with Him.
(2) Send them out to preach:
• The disciples are called to Preach v14: The word “ preach”, kēryssō it means to be a herald, to proclaim, to preach.
St. Francis of Assisi said, Preach always, if necessary, use words. ¨
(3) Authority to drive out demons:
• They were given the power to heal the sick and to cast out devils. These were “sign gifts”. They were given this power to validate their ministry to the people they preached to.
Conclusion: God calls us to serve Jesus, regardless of our circumstances or background God has a place of service for you and me.
